ARC OF WESTCHESTER HONORED LOCAL BUSINESS LEADERS SUPPORTING WORKERS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Keynote speaker Dr. Joseph Hankin, President of WCC, thanked employers for their commitment to creating inclusive workplace environments.

HAWTHORNE, NY – On April 27, 2012, Arc of Westchester honored local businesses and civic groups for their commitment to supporting employees with developmental disabilities at their annual Employer Recognition Breakfast, held at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown. (see highlights)

Currently celebrating over 60 years in the community, Arc of Westchester has long advocated inclusion for individuals with disabilities in the workforce because of the benefits inclusion brings to the entire community. Arc of Westchester links people with developmental disabilities to the local employment community through its Career and Employment Servicesprograms. Over the years, Arc of Westchester has partnered with approximately 250 businesses in the county, and currently over 300 individuals are making contributions as valued employees in the community.

“We recognized these remarkable businesses for their extraordinary effort to include employees with developmental disabilities in the workplace. These are businesses that truly value the contributions and unique talents that employees with developmental disabilities bring to the table. We are honored by their commitment to employment inclusion and look forward to letting the community know of their outstanding work”, said Ric Swierat, Executive Director, Arc of Westchester.

Dr. Joseph Hankin, President of Westchester Community College, congratulated the honorees and spoke of his personal commitment at Westchester Community College to advocate for people with developmental disabilities. Dr. Hankin has a deep interest in employment issues in our community and is a member of the Westchester-Putnam Workforce Investment Board. A full list of the 2012 Employer Recognition Awards distributed at the event can be found here.

Several businesses, including Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Tarrytown and MBIA Inc. in Armonk, spoke about their successful partnership with Arc of Westchester during the awards ceremony.

Notable attendees at this annual event include local politicians and business leaders such as: Thomas Roach, Mayor of White Plains; Tim Idoni, Westchester County Clerk; Kevin Plunkett, Deputy County Executive; Rosa Boone, Deputy Commissioner Westchester County Department of Social Services.
