Hungry Heroes Award

On June 14, we were thrilled to be honored alongside four other local organizations at Feeding Westchester’s 14th annual Hunger Heroes Breakfast.

Nearly 58,000 children in Westchester County live in poverty low enough to federally qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch. This is equivalent to a ratio of 1-to-3 school children in the county – a staggering statistic.

The Arc Westchester began volunteering with Feeding Westchester’s BackPack program in the fall of 2015 to provide nearly 60,000 “BackPacks” of child-friendly meals to elementary school children who need it most.

When we started our partnership, approximately 36 of our individuals delivered to nine school locations throughout the county. Since then, our commitment to the BackPack program has grown significantly; currently, nearly 120 Arc Westchester volunteers pick up and deliver BackPacks to 19 school locations twice a month. These deliveries total more than 2,600 BackPacks delivered to more than 1,300 children in need every month.

The Arc Westchester is happy to assist Feeding Westchester in fulfilling its mission to end hunger in the county while also providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve independence and give back to their communities.
