New Video: #bfair2directcare
Meet the faces of the Arcs of New York State
There are more than 100,000 Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) throughout New York State. A new video by the statewide Be Fair to Direct Care campaign will introduce you to just a few of them and the incredible people they support.
It’s not easy to summarize the work of a DSP. Day to day, they may be responsible for the dressing, transportation and meal preparation of a person they’re supporting. In more complex circumstances, they provide medical administration such as tube feeding, diabetic care or oxygen management. They are also teachers who convey the importance of personal care, money management and behavioral skills. Through it all, they are someone’s communicator or trusted guide.
Most DSPs earn, on average, between $10 and $13 per hour. As you’ll see, this is anything but minimum wage work and DSPs are consummate professionals on the frontlines of our communities.
Thank you to our Arc friends in Cattaraugus, Rockland, and Warren-Washington-Albany County Chapters for providing their staff the opportunity to tell their stories.
