NYSARC Trust Provides $8,000 Grant

NYSARC Trust Provides $8,000 Grant to Arc of Westchester Program

HAWTHORNE, NY – December 15, 2015 - The Trustees of the New York State ARC (NYSARC) Trusts approved a remainder fund grant of $8,000 to provide recreational opportunities for Arc of Westchester program participants.

Last year, the Chapter received a similar grant from NYSARC Trust Services. In 2015, the Chapter allocated these funds for three different initiatives that directly supported over 400 individuals. Here are some of the areas where funds were used:

  • A 12’x16’ greenhouse was built on the grounds of Arc of Westchester’s main location in Hawthorne, NY. The new greenhouse is being used by several departments as part of a community green initiative. Funds were used to construct the unit and purchase gardening supplies and tools. Participants learned new job skills in the areas of horticulture by seeding, planting, feeding, gardening and composting. These skills will ultimately lead to employment in the environmental field.

  • The funds from this grant were also used to offset costs for our Third Annual Gateway Gala. Over 50 young individuals from our Without Walls Choices Program attended this semi-formal event. A DJ provided music for dancing, a wooden dance floor was installed and a photo booth allowed individuals to go home with a framed memento of the night.

  • Additional funds from this grant were also used to offset expenses at Arc of Westchester's 28th Annual Spring Ball. This semi-formal dinner dance was held at the Westchester Marriott for about 600 participants from Arc of Westchester, other local agencies and staff.  Funds were used for two professional photo booths and individuals went home with a framed memento of the night.

Arc of Westchester plans to use the funds in the same fashion this year. We are extremely grateful to NYSARC Trusts for making this possible!

In addition, remainder fund grants totaling $ 1,466,000 were awarded to support NYSARC guardianship programs statewide.  A total of $1,874,000 in remainder grants was awarded in 2015 to support recreation and guardianship statewide.  NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts that enable people with disabilities to remain in their home and community while retaining Medicaid services and other government benefits.   Information is available on how NYSARC Trust Services may benefit you:  our website www.nysarctrustservices.org, phone 1-518-439-8323, toll free phone 1-800-735-8924 or e-mail [email protected]
