Westchester County Held NDEAM Awards Breakfast

Westchester County held their 2017 Annual Achievement Awards Breakfast in celebration of NDEAM (National Disability Employment Awareness Month) at the Doubletree in Tarrytown. Robert P. Astorino, Westchester County Executive, welcomed guest and recognized 32 businesses and 39 employees for their impact on our local communities. He paid special tribute to businesses who continue to partner with organizations in hiring people with disabilities. “It is always a pleasure to recognize those individuals who have overcome obstacles and succeeded at their jobs,” Astorino said. “It is also a tribute to those businesses that have done so much to support employees with disabilities in Westchester. Congratulations are deserved for all involved.”

The County Executive also took this opportunity to unveil a new public service announcement about emergency preparedness for people with disabilities. Filmed as part of Emergency Preparedness Month in conjunction with Westchester Independent Living Center, United Way 2-1-1, and various Westchester County departments, the video highlights four key points of being prepared in an emergency: make a plan, build a kit, be informed, get involved. The keynote speaker was Joshua Gaccione, Director of Westchester Community College Veterans Resource Center. He gave a motivational speech about his personal struggles having a disability and shared stories about supports he received to advance his career opportunities. 

Arc of Westchester's business partner, ABB Optical Group, was a recipient of The 2017 Regional NDEAM Award. The optical company employs two individuals full time at their Hawthorne location.They have collaborated with Arc of Westchester offering opportunities for individuals to learn new job skills and become part of their large workforce.
